Distance: 25 miles
Skyline Drive is a 105-mile road that runs the length of Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Located just 20 minutes east of Harrisonburg, VA, the road follows the mountain ridges offering sweeping panaramic vistas of the Shenandoah Valley. Opportunities exist for camping, hiking, wildlife viewing or just relaxing. Shenandoah National Park attracts over 2 million visitors each year.

A drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway is slow paced and relaxing. Almost any overlook or trail will reveal much of the natural and cultural history here. Explore the many communities along the route that make the region so special.

The Shenandoah river offers an array of outdoor activities for the entire family. From the spring through fall, the river is a great place to go canoeing, kayaking, tubing, fishing or swimming. There are several public access points along the river. The closest one to Harrisonburg is in Port Republic, only 10 miles from town. There are many outfitters on the river that offer canoe rentals, tubing trips and guided fishing trips. Check out the links below for more information on these services.

Caverns
Distance: 20-50 miles
Thanks to it’s karst topography, Virginia is home to some of the most beautiful and stunning caverns found in the country. If you are visiting the area, be sure to see what the caverns have to offer. There are 5 caverns that are within 45 minutes of Harrisonburg. Any of these are great places to visit during your stay.

Distance: 65 miles
Located about 1 hour south of Harrisonburg, the Virginia Safari Park offers visitors a unique chance to see exotic animals in a natural setting. You will find zebras, giraffes, ostriches, buffalo, bison, llamas, camels, elk, monkeys, tigers and more. The park allows you to purchase food that you can take with you to feed the animals by hand. You can drive your own vehicle or ride on a trailer provided by the park. It’s a rare chance to see these exotic animals up close and in person.

Natural Chimneys is located in Mount Solon, VA and offers visitors a chance to see a solid rock formation towering 120 feet above the valley. Viewing from below, they appear to look like giant chimneys rising out of the ground. There is a campground, picnic area and a river that is stocked with trout seasonally. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Natural Chimneys from Harrisonburg.
